According to the AISI classification system, chromium hot-work tool steels are classified as group H steels. H1 to H19 are the steels in this series. H11, H12, and H13 are the most regularly used chromium hot-work steels, and they can be air-hardened in 150 mm thick sections. Due to their balanced alloy content, the steels have low distortion during hardening. Because chromium hot-work steels have low carbon and alloy levels, they can be cooled with water without causing harm.
Application of Grade
Highly stressed structural items, such as aero plane landing gear, are frequently made of H11 alloy steel. Hot punches, die casting dies, forging dies, hot shear blades, hot gripper dies, and extrusion tooling are some examples of common applications.
Because H11 chromium hot-work steels have low carbon and alloy levels, they can be cooled with water without causing harm. At IMI International, we are a dependable Die Steel H11 Round Bar suppliers, and we offer and deliver H-11 tool steel of suitable quality. For the lowest price on AISI H11 steel materials, you can always reach out to use on the provided numbers.
H11 steel can be heat treated in a variety of ways to achieve varied characteristics. Annealing, hardening/austenitizing, air and oil quenching, and single or double tempering at temperatures of 840° F (450° C), 930° F (500° C), 1020° F (550° C), 1110° F (600° C), and 1200° F (650° C) are common heat treatments for this steel alloy.
According to several independent research, oil-quenching and double-tempering at 1020° F (550° C) are the best heat treatments for a combination of hardness, toughness, yield strength, ultimate strength, and ductility. Oil-quenching and double tempering at 1110° F (600° C) can result in higher hardness; however this can also result in poorer lead strength and ductility.
In addition, when the hardness of H11 steel increases, the impact toughness falls. H11 steel has a high harden ability and should be cooled in still air to harden. To reduce decarburization, a salt bath or controlled environment furnace is preferred, but if neither is available, pack hardening in spent pitch coke is recommended. Depending on the size of the part, the temperature used is usually 1800°-1850°F.
Tempering
H11 tool steels are tempered at temperatures ranging from 538 to 649°C (1000 to 1200°F) to achieve Rockwell C hardness of 54 to 38. These steels can also be double-tempered every one hour at the desired tempering temperature.
