High-speed steel is available in a variety of grades and kinds. ASP 2023, also known as S790, PM 23, and M3-2, provides consistent outcomes in a variety of industrial settings. Being the ASP23 HSS Powder Metallurgy Steel manufacturer, IMI international offers this high alloyed powder metallurgical steel with a variety of characteristics, chemical treatments, and applications.
Physical Characteristics
PM 23 steel is an ASP 2023 equivalent with strong compressive strength and outstanding wear resistance. As a result, it can be used for a variety of cold work applications and cutting tools. For excellent grindability and machinability, choose PM 23 steel.
Because of its chemical characteristics, it resists dimensional instability after heat treatment, making it a viable candidate for common thermal treatments as well as cold rolling manufacturing procedures.
Treatments with heat
The ASP 2023 comparable alloy can be subjected to five different thermal treatments. Depending on your application, each one has its own set of advantages:
Preheating: To prepare the steel for a thermal treatment, it is heated to temperatures ranging from 840 to 930 degrees Fahrenheit and 1560 to 1650 degrees Fahrenheit. Before austenitizing or doing additional heat treatments, complete this preheating step.
Austenitizing: After the preheating step, rapidly raise the temperature by transferring the steel to a new furnace. For this second furnace, set the temperature between 1920 and 2160 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure a good hardening process, avoid oxidation and decarburization.
Quenching: Begin with a vacuum furnace with enough high-speed gas overpressure, often between 2 and 5 bar. The product is heated to roughly 1020 degrees Fahrenheit in a fluidized bed or martempering bath, then cooled to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Finish by tempering right away.
Tempering: ASP 2023 steel is tempered at 1040 degrees Fahrenheit for cold work applications. After that, three full-temperature tempering rounds for one hour are completed. Between rounds, the product must be chilled to room temperature. The austenite content is less than 1% as a result.
Annealing- It should be done after hot working but before re-hardening. Begin by heating the alloy at a rate of no more than 400 degrees Fahrenheit per hour until it reaches 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintain this temperature for at least 2 hours per inch of product thickness.
During the cooling phase, don't drop the temperature more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit per hour until it reaches 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally, chill to room temperature using the air conditioner or furnace.
